Listen to Me, you who follow after righteousness, you who seek the LORD: Look to the rock from which you were hewn, and to the hole of the pit from which you were dug. Look to Abraham your father, and to Sarah who bore you; for I called him alone, and blessed him and increased him. Isaiah 51.1-2
In this passage, God is speaking to Israel after they came out of Babylonian captivity. These people yearned for righteousness after leaving a life of abuse, slavery, humiliation and misery. To them, He said: Listen to Me…
God only speaks to those who have a desire for righteousness, of themselves to Him, and from Him to themselves.
God said: Look to the rock…
Look to the rock means to look to God. Those who desire righteousness should stop seeking justice in other men, and look to God and His Word, seeking in Him what has already been promised.
Then He said: Look to Abraham…
Those who want the righteousness of God must practice a faith molded after the same faith Abraham practiced.
In this passage, God was also trying to show that these people, though weak and humiliated by years spent in captivity, could become great, prosperous and strong like Abraham who, even though advanced in age, without strength and hope, became the father of a large and powerful nation.
God bless us with His Righteousness
