The awareness of the baptism with the Holy Spirit was the foundation of the early church. It was what moved the apostles because nothing was more important to them.
Look at the question the apostles asked: Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed? (Acts 19.2). They did not want to know if the person was healed, if he was prosperous, if his family was doing well or anything else. What they wanted to know was: HAVE YOU RECEIVED THE HOLY SPIRIT?
It’s not that they didn’t care about the needs of the people, but they were more concerned about them remaining in the faith. This is why they lived and conveyed this awareness of the baptism with the Holy Spirit, which resulted in the outpouring, since the people were so sensitive to this faith.
When we truly want a strong Church, there is no other way to go about it; we must invest in awakening this awareness, this thirst, in the people. Only then will they be baptized, because they will seek Him more than anything else they want to achieve!
The Lord Jesus instilled this idea in His disciples, and this was so strong that He said: Stay in Jerusalem until you are empowered from on high (Luke 24.49 HCSB). Jesus was not concerned with the miracles they would perform, but that they remained until the end, so that they could face everything and remain firm.
The man of God thinks like Jesus and does what He would do if He were in his place. We should never ignore the gifts, the miracles, but our greatest focus must be to lead people to the baptism with the Holy Spirit!
