…You anoint my head with oil… Psalm 23.5
What David said in this verse caught my attention. First, we should remember that David was a shepherd before becoming king, so he knew everything about sheep.
In the past, shepherds needed to take great care of their sheep, because in the arid and dry desert, insects and flies were constantly tormenting the sheep. Often, they’d seek the moisture of the mucosa in their nostrils to lay their eggs, which soon turned to larvae. When this happened, the poor sheep went into utter despair, running from side to side, shaking their heads, trying to get rid of the discomfort caused by the flies.
They say that when this happened, the sheep became very weak and even depressed. Some would even kill themselves by banging their heads on rocks or trees to get rid of the larvae. To help the sheep, shepherds anointed their heads, using the oil as a repellent to ward off insects.
The devil wants to deposit his larvae in our head, he wants to torment us and lead us to despair. Nowadays, we see people being tormented by the devil, who surrounds their minds with thoughts and doubts that leave them discouraged, weak, defeated and afraid. Some even kill themselves; all because they lack the anointing of the Holy Spirit in their lives.
We know that this oil is not only referring to the actual substance, but to the baptism of the Holy Spirit, the new birth. When we receive the Holy Spirit, we also receive a repellent that protects us. Evil may even want to rise against us, but it cannot persist, because we have the Oil that repels it.
…but he who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him. 1 John 5.18
